Madagascar Criollo-Trinitario, Trinitario, Forastero cacao/cocoa, grown in the rainforests of the Sambirano river valley, north west Madagascar and recently Vohibinany in the east coast of Madagascar.
Fine Cacao ( Criollo) was first introduced to Madagascar in 1822, from La Reunion island. It was first planted in the east coast rainforests near Ivoloina and Vohibinany. This part of Madagascar was susceptible to cyclone's and so in the 1900's the cacao was planted in the Sambirano valley, north west of Madagascar which is sheltered by the Tsaratanana mountain.
In 2012 Chocolaterie Robert re-planted in the east coast 100,000 cocoa trees in Vohibinany, with the first harvests in 2016.
In 2013, the fine cacao of Sambirano receives Organic BIO status by ECOCERT.
In 2015 MAVA estate plantation of 1726 hectares was purchased and spans the upper and lower Sambirano valley of Madagascar. It includes 8 agroforesty farms offering different terroir cacao - Ankidony, Ambalahonko, Ambohimena Nord, Ambohimena Sud, Antsamala, Maliolo, Ambodivato and Ottange.
MAVA Ottange & MAVA Ambohimena wins the Cocoa of Excellence Awards at the Salon du Chocolat Paris in October 2017 & 2019 .
